What Causes Sore Throat and Ear Pain?

sore throat and ear pain

Often, symptoms of sore throat and ear pain happen simultaneously. But what causes this exactly? We explore the answer and more in our blog!

How Are the Throat and Ear Connected?

While the throat and ears have two very different functions, they’re actually connected by what’s called the Eustachian tube. Similar to the nose and throat, this tube is lined with mucus, and runs from the middle ear area to the top and back of the throat. Further, the Eustachian tube contains tiny bones in the middle ear that carry sound to the ears and regulate pressure, which are called the malleus, incus and stapes bones. Fun fact – they’re the tiniest bones in the human body!

The Eustachian tube can also experience blockage for various reasons, resulting in discomfort and even pain. When this tube area becomes blocked, it creates a vacuum-type sensation in the middle ear, which creates a sensation of clogging and sinus pressure. If you’ve ever taken off in a plane and experienced ear popping, this is exactly what this vacuum effect feels like!

Sore Throat and Ear Pain Symptoms

Because of this connection, throat and ear pain often occur in unison. While there can be multiple root causes for illness and infection, symptoms in this area are fairly uniformed. Here’s some common throat and ear symptoms one with an illness may experience.

Causes of Simultaneous Throat and Ear Pain

  • Allergic Reaction – An allergic reaction to certain foods, drink or medications may cause swelling of the throat, consequently causing the ear cavities to swell.
  • Sinusitis – Chronis sinusitis is one of the primary causes of sore throat and ear pain, which can be triggered by a viral or bacterial infection.
  • Seasonal Allergies – Especially during peak pollen seasons, seasonal allergies can result in that familiar miserable cloggy feeling. This can often be remedied by over the counter medicine.
  • Toothache or Infection – Believe it or not, a toothache or even abscess tooth can be the culprit to ear and throat pain, as well as swelling in your glands.

  • Virus/Illness – Viruses like the flu or strep throat can cause white pockets in the back of the throat, as well as significantly clogged ears and accompanied fever.
  • Temporary IrritantSometimes ear and throat flair ups are caused by an unfamiliar or irritating stimulant, which usually subside within a matter of hours.

Easy Methods to Stay Well

A warm compress on the face is a popular remedy for sore throat and ear pain, one of which remedies congestion in both the middle ear and throat. Have you ever suffered from that scratchy feeling in the top back of your throat? Sleeping with a humidifier can improve breathing and significantly boost sleep quality.

Hot herbal teas and non-sugary fluids throughout the day are an easy way to stay unclogged and avoid the overall feeling of congestion. If you’re going into an environment where you know you may experience frequent ear popping or discomfort, chew a sugar free gum. Lastly, a daily over the counter decongestant is a helpful solution, especially in months that trigger seasonal allergies.
