Ward off mosquito bites with essential oils

Can the infamous mosquito really be thwarted by essential oils? Research indicates this might be a possibility! Here’s some concoctions to try for a non-toxic pest repellant.

Mosquitos, the Ultimate Summer Pest

The mosquito is the most annoying insect you can imagine. It doesn’t matter where we go, they just won’t leave us alone! Texas has perhaps one of the most ideal and extended climates for them, with peak times running from late spring to early fall. In addition to being a nuisance, mosquitos can also be dangerous. They can transmit diseases like malaria, dengue fever, and Zika.

Can Essential Oils Help?

If you’re looking for a natural way to keep mosquitoes away, essential oils may be a good option for you! There are a number of essential oils that have been shown to be effective at repelling mosquitoes, including citronella, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree oil, and lavender. These oils work by emitting a scent that mosquitoes find unpleasant. They can be used in a variety of ways, including:

  • Diffusing them in the air: This is a great way to keep mosquitoes away from your home or office.
  • Applying them to your skin: Be sure to dilute the essential oils with a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or coconut oil.
  • Making a spray: Mix a few drops of essential oil with water in a spray bottle. You can then spray this on your skin or around your home.
