tips to cope with stress the healthy way

tips to cope with stress

Let’s face it, life is full of significant stressors and situations that can weigh us down both mentally and physically. Here’s some tips to cope with stress in a healthy manner.

Stress is an Epidemic

Stress has become such a commonality in our society that it is almost expected, unavoidable, and unmanageable. Further, if we take the time to self-examine, one can argue that living in stress has become less of a struggle to remedy and more of an unavoidable experience to simply “cope” with. The American Institute of Stress reports that roughly 73% of people agree that stress impacts their mental health, while almost 40% say said stress is completely overwhelming.

We are facing a national mental health crisis that could yield serious health and social consequences for years to come.”

Stress Affects Other People Differently

With the seriousness of stress in mind, it is not a one-size-fits-all factor for everyone. While some are naturally more sensitive to stress and coping with it, others are naturally more “resilient” in the moment. This is due to a variety of factors, such as temperament differences, personality traits, upbringing, and acclimation. However, this doesn’t mean that the long-term effects of stress (especially prolonged stress) are not still prevalent. We ALL need tips to cope with stress in a healthy and productive manner and can benefit from mindful practices in a variety of situations.

Tips to Cope with Stress

Self-face massage: Let’s start with a physical solution! When breaking from a high stress situation, start with massaging your temples with your index and forefinger for 1-2 minutes. Do the same to your forehead and jawline, staying as relaxed as possible.

Identify high stress triggers: It is true that avoiding stressful situations altogether is unavoidable. However, identify what situations, happenings, environments, or triggers result in a prolonged negative reaction to said stressor and establish boundaries and support within them.

Limit certain stimulants: If you identify as being highly stressed and have experienced worsening mental or physical symptoms from said stress, avoiding certain stimulants is a healthy avenue of healing and coping (in addition to peer or professional support).

Practice mindfulness: Breathing exercises, yoga, frequent breaks during the day, and even certain mobile apps with mindful reminders are easy tools to implement mindfulness practices in your daily routine.

Connect with multiple community avenues: Most know the benefits of community and connection. However, it is important to cultivate multiple outlets of community and the relationships within them, one of which being the workplace.

Make physical health a priority: From a weekly exercise routine to diet and especially sound sleep, physical health plays an important role in stress response and filtration. for more information on this, click the article above!
